A lot of the time, those of us that grew up in the 90s think of the resurgence of that culture in a positive light. We feel a deep nostalgia for our childhood. We remember the things we enjoyed such as listening to an NSYNC song or eating snacks like Dunkaroos. Snailmate details that time period from a uniquely different view. Their single “It’s Coming Back” sucks us in with its vibrant distortion and gravelly vocals. The chorus’ spine-curdling scream of terror makes their message of a 90s nightmare all too real. The visuals fit the song’s vibe seamlessly with fuzzy, static hues. The retro, geometric patterns on a t-shirt worn under overalls transport viewers straight back to that decade.
Drummer/vocalist Bentley Monet and vocalist/synth player Kalen Lander of Snailmate are part of the LGBTQ+ community. They truly represent the group proudly. They pride themselves on creating a safe space for all when they perform. This latest single is another example of expressing yourself freely. The two are providing a voice for all those that struggled growing up in the 90s. Snailmate confesses, “The ‘good ol days’ weren’t really that great. I don’t understand nostalgia at all; it’s basically ignoring all the terrible crap we all experienced!” The Phoenix-based duo has crafted a sound that blends synth, punk and pop. “It’s Coming Back” showcases their rare, intoxicating infusion in full force.
